Recently, Willy Santos, professional skateboarder and former long-time resident of the community of Mira Mesa, got the word from his San Diego City Council contact that there was indeed a plan in the works for a skatepark in Mira Mesa, but that the current economic crises across the local, state, and national levels all but required the city to put those plans on hold. Now, however, Santos has decided to rally the efforts of the community to give Mira Mesa the skatepark to so desperately needs.
At a luncheon involving San Diego resident and world-renowned skateboarding icon Tony Hawk, Santos announced plans to incorporate a non-profit organization that will raise funds for the construction and completion of the park, currently allotted to land in the existing Mira Mesa Community Park and Gil Johnson Recreation Center. Santos also announced his intentions to rally support for the cause on local network San Diego 6 : The CW during an interview with anchor Marc Bailey.
"I gew up skateboarding in Mira Mesa, and I would like to give something back to the community," Santos said. "With a large community of skateboarders living and growing up in Mira Mesa today, a public skatepark is definitely something that needs to happen, to help keep the kids active and out of trouble."
